Nathia Gali Height from Sea Level: 2,410 m (7,910 ft), and What That Altitude Means for Your Trip
October 2026Nathia Gali is about 2,410 metres above sea level, which is roughly 7,910 feet. That puts it around 1,870 metres higher than Islamabad and about 120 metres higher than Murree, and it is the main reason the village is 10 to 12°C cooler than the capital on most days of the year. The peaks that rise directly above it, Mukshpuri and Miranjani, reach about 2,800 and 2,992 metres.
This guide puts Nathiagali's height in context against the other places people ask about, then explains what living and travelling at 2,410 metres really involves, and which of the usual altitude worries you can safely forget.
What is the height of Nathia Gali in feet and metres?
The figure most references use is 2,410 metres, or about 7,910 feet. The village is spread along a ridge, so the bazaar, the church and the houses higher up the hillside differ by a few dozen metres, and you will see figures from about 2,400 to 2,500 metres quoted online. For planning purposes, think of Nathia Gali as a village at just under 8,000 feet.
How high is Nathia Gali compared with nearby places?
Here is the comparison from highest to lowest. Heights are the figures most commonly published; where sources disagree we say so.
Miranjani: about 2,992 m (9,816 ft). The highest peak in the Galiyat, reached on foot from Nathia Gali in roughly two to three hours of climbing. Some mountain-weather services list it a few metres lower, at around 2,980 m.
Mukshpuri: about 2,800 m (roughly 9,200 ft). The second-highest peak in the Galiyat, climbed from Dunga Gali or from Nathia Gali through Lalazar. You will see 9,214 ft and higher figures online; 2,800 m converts to about 9,186 ft.
Thandiani: about 2,750 m (9,020 ft). A quieter hill station on its own ridge north-east of Abbottabad, a little higher than Nathia Gali but far less developed.
Changla Gali: figures disagree. Some references give about 2,800 m (9,200 ft), which appears to describe the hilltop above the village; older guides quote around 2,560 m (8,400 ft) for the settlement on the road. Either way, the road over Changla Gali is one of the highest stretches between Murree and Abbottabad and holds snow and ice longer than most.
Dunga Gali: about 2,500 m (8,200 ft) by the commonly quoted figure, 3 to 4 km from Nathia Gali. In practice the two villages sit at very similar heights along the same ridge.
Nathia Gali: about 2,410 m (7,910 ft).
Ayubia: about 2,400 m (8,000 ft) on average across the national park and the resort area around Ghora Dhaka, so effectively the same height as Nathia Gali.
Murree: about 2,291 m (7,517 ft), roughly 120 m lower than Nathia Gali, which is one reason Nathia Gali tends to feel a little colder and to keep its snow slightly longer.
Abbottabad: about 1,256 m (4,120 ft), some 1,150 m below Nathia Gali, which is why the city is so much warmer even though it is only about 34 km away by road.
Islamabad: about 540 m (1,770 ft), with figures from roughly 500 to 580 m depending on where in the city you measure. That is about 1,870 m lower than Nathia Gali.
For where all of these places sit on the map and how the road links them, see our Galiyat location guide.

Air cools by roughly 6 to 6.5°C for every 1,000 metres you climb, and the long-term averages bear that out here. Islamabad's 1991 to 2020 normals give an average October high of about 31°C; Murree's long-term records give about 18 to 19°C for the same month. Nathia Gali, slightly higher again, runs about a degree cooler than Murree. Put simply, expect it to be 10 to 13°C colder than Islamabad at any given moment, more at night and on windy days.
That gap is the whole appeal in June, when Islamabad is regularly above 40°C and Nathia Gali sits comfortably in the low to mid twenties. It is also why a jacket is never optional: a pleasant 25°C afternoon in Islamabad in late October is a 12 to 15°C afternoon on the ridge, and a cold night.
Will I get altitude sickness in Nathia Gali?
Very unlikely. Acute mountain sickness is mainly a risk above about 2,500 metres, and at 2,410 m Nathia Gali sits just below that threshold. The air holds roughly three quarters of the oxygen pressure you get at sea level, which most healthy people do not notice beyond slight breathlessness on the first steep climb.
What you may feel is ordinary effort: the walk up to Lalazar or St. Matthew's Church is uphill and you will notice it more than you would at home. A few people, particularly those arriving from Karachi or Lahore and walking hard on the first day, get a mild headache or poor first night's sleep. Drinking water, going easy on day one and saving Miranjani for day two or three takes care of it. Anyone with heart or lung conditions should ask their doctor before travel, as they would for any trip of this height, but there is no need for altitude medication or a formal acclimatisation plan.
Does water boil differently at this altitude?
Yes, slightly. Water boils at about 92°C at Nathia Gali rather than 100°C at sea level. In practice that means pulses, chickpeas and tough cuts of meat take noticeably longer, which is why pressure cookers are standard in hill kitchens. Tea is fine. Rice and pasta need a few extra minutes. It is a cooking nuisance, not a health issue, and boiled water is still safe to drink.
Where does the snow start in winter?
Nathia Gali's height puts it comfortably above the usual winter snow line, which is why it gets reliable, heavy snow from December to February. In a typical winter, snow settles across the whole ridge from Murree to Nathia Gali and Thandiani, while Abbottabad, more than 1,100 metres lower, sees snow only occasionally and it rarely lasts. The upshot is that on many winter days you drive out of rain or sunshine in the valley and into snow somewhere on the climb.
Our snow guide covers when it falls, how deep it gets and what it does to the roads.
Read the Nathiagali snow guide →How steep is the drive up?
From Abbottabad, the road climbs about 1,150 metres in roughly 34 km, an average gradient of a little over 3 percent with much steeper sections on the bends. From Islamabad via Murree, most of the climb, around 1,750 metres, happens on the expressway before Murree, and the last 34 km along the ridge rises and falls rather than climbing steadily.
Any ordinary car manages it in dry weather. The real issue is coming down: use a low gear and let the engine brake rather than riding the brake pedal on long descents, which overheats brakes. Cars also feel slightly less powerful at this height because thinner air means less oxygen for combustion; that is normal and not a fault.

Read the Nathiagali driving guide →Does the altitude affect what you should pack?
More than anything else. At 2,410 m the temperature swings between day and night are large, the sun is stronger than it feels because there is less atmosphere filtering it, and the weather turns quickly. Pack layers rather than one heavy coat, a waterproof shell, sunscreen and sunglasses even in winter, and shoes with real grip for the hillside paths.
