Nathiagali with Family: A Practical Guide for Kids, Grandparents and Big Groups

October 2026

Yes, Nathia Gali is one of the easiest mountain trips in Pakistan to do with children and grandparents, and it is one of the easiest mountain destinations in Pakistan to do with three generations at once: the altitude is gentle, the signature walk is flat, the drive from Islamabad is short enough for small children, and a real city with hospitals is 30 to 45 minutes away. This guide covers what a family actually needs to know, from car sickness on the hill road to which accommodation keeps everyone in one place.

The short answer

Go between April and October, leave the city early, base yourselves in the village rather than day-tripping, and choose a family apartment over several hotel rooms. Walk the Pipeline Track, keep the evenings warm and early, and let the grandparents set the pace.

The drive with children and older travellers

From Islamabad, the Murree Expressway is smooth and fast and the whole drive is about 80 to 90 km and 2.5 hours; the winding section starts after Murree and lasts roughly an hour to Nathiagali. This is where children get car sick, so eat lightly beforehand, keep the car cool, take a break in Murree or at one of the viewpoints, and sit anyone prone to nausea in the front or by a window. Leave by 8 am to arrive for lunch, and never plan to drive the hill road after dark with a car full of tired children. From Abbottabad the road climbs 34 km through forest and takes 30 to 45 minutes.

Altitude, cold and health

At about 2,410 metres, Nathiagali is high enough to feel the air but well below the altitude where most people have problems; children and healthy older adults adjust within a few hours. The real issue is cold. Evenings drop sharply even in July, so pack warm layers for everyone and a proper coat for grandparents. Nathiagali has basic medical facilities and a pharmacy for essentials; full hospitals are in Abbottabad, 30 to 45 minutes down the road. Bring regular medication for the whole trip plus a spare day, and children's fever medicine and plasters as a matter of course.

Things to do with children

The Pipeline Track is the centrepiece: a flat, shaded trail of about 4 km through pine forest from Dunga Gali to Ayubia that a five-year-old can manage with stops. The Ayubia chairlift, once the highlight of most children's trip, has been closed since 2021 and we could not confirm a reopening at the time of writing, so ask locally before you promise it. At Ayubia the national park's monkeys will appear whether you want them to or not, so keep food packed away. Lalazar wildlife park above the village is an easy walk, horses are available for short rides in season, and the bazaar has enough tea stalls and sweet shops to bribe anyone through the last kilometre. In winter, the simplest activity of all is snow in the garden of wherever you are staying.

Things to do with grandparents

Nathiagali suits older travellers because its best moments are slow: a bench with a view, tea in the bazaar, a gentle stretch of the Pipeline Track without doing the whole thing, St. Matthew's Church from 1914, and the ridge road at sunset. Avoid Mukshpuri and Miranjani unless they are regular hikers. Ask about stairs and lifts when you book, since several floors of stairs in cold weather is the single most common complaint older visitors have about hill-station hotels.

Where a family stays: rooms or an apartment?

Two or three hotel rooms split a family down a corridor and leave nowhere to gather except a restaurant. A family apartment does the opposite: children asleep behind one door, grandparents behind another, and a shared lounge for the evening. A kitchen matters more than most families expect for bottles, snacks and the picky eater's plain rice.

MYG Nathiagali's three-bedroom serviced apartment was set up for exactly this. It has three furnished bedrooms and 3.5 washrooms, a lounge with a wall-mounted smart TV, a dining table for six and a fitted kitchen with fridge and microwave, plus free Wi-Fi, a tea setup, an on-site cook and room service from the restaurant floor. The building has a high-speed elevator and sits on the main Nathia Gali road two minutes' walk from the bazaar. Smaller families and couples with one child can take the one-bedroom attic apartment. Mention ages and party size when you enquire so the team can set the apartment up for you.

The best months for a family trip

May to June and September to October are ideal: mild days, cool evenings, dry trails and easier bookings. July and August are the school holidays and peak season, cooler than the plains but busy, so book early and travel midweek if you can. A snow trip between December and February is magical for children and demands the most planning: confirm road conditions, keep dates flexible, pack for serious cold and ask your accommodation how it handles the cold and power cuts. Spring, from late March into April, is the quiet bargain with the forest coming back to life.

Our snow guide explains when the snow usually arrives and what the roads are like with children in the car.

Is Nathia Gali safe for children?

For a mountain village, yes, with a few sensible rules. The main road through the bazaar is busy and has no pavements in places, so hold small hands near traffic. Ayubia's monkeys are bold, so keep food out of sight and never let children feed them. The forest is leopard habitat; encounters are very rare, but keep children on the main trails and in sight, and be back in the village before dusk. Viewpoints along the ridge road have steep drops, and wet or icy steps are the most common cause of minor injuries, so pack shoes with grip for everyone.

Packing list for families

Layers for everyone, a warm hat and gloves in every month except high summer, rain shells, walking shoes with grip, sun protection, a small first-aid kit with children's medicine, car-sickness tablets, snacks and refillable water bottles, a torch, chargers and a power bank, and a favourite blanket or toy for young children in a new bed. In winter add thermals, a heavy coat, waterproof boots and spare socks.

A simple two-day family plan

Day one: arrive for lunch, rest, walk the bazaar and up towards Lalazar in the late afternoon, early dinner in the apartment. Day two: Pipeline Track in the morning (one way, with a taxi back from Ayubia) with tea and pakoras at Ayubia as the reward, lunch back in the village, a slow afternoon for naps and the church, and either a second night or a departure by 3 pm to be home for bedtime.

For a longer trip, our day-by-day itinerary shows how to add a third day without exhausting anyone.

Families who come back every year sometimes decide a permanent base makes more sense. The same building has 2 Bedroom (about 1,800 sq ft) and 3 Bedroom (about 2,100 sq ft) apartments for sale, each with a servant room and dedicated parking.

Families who visit once tend to come back every year, and many eventually ask about owning a base here rather than booking one. Either way, the first step is the same: call +92 333 9111 550 or WhatsApp +92 334 4131332 with your dates, party size and ages, and the on-site team will confirm what is open.
