Nathiagali vs Naran vs Swat: Which Hill Station Should You Choose This Summer?
October 2026Choose Nathia Gali for a weekend or a trip with small children or grandparents, Naran for four or five summer days of lakes and high passes, and Swat for a week of variety. Every summer the same debate starts in family WhatsApp groups across Islamabad and Lahore: Naran or Nathiagali? Or should we finally do Swat? All three are in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, all three are cool when the plains are not, and all three are beautiful. But they are very different trips, and the most common mistake is choosing a destination that does not fit the number of days you actually have.
We are based in Nathiagali, so treat us as a biased witness, but we have tried to be fair. There are trips for which Naran or Swat is plainly the better answer, and we say so below.
The short answer
If you have a weekend, choose Nathiagali: it is about 2.5 hours from Islamabad, so two days means two days in the mountains rather than two days in the car. If you have four or five days in summer and want big alpine scenery, lakes and a high pass, choose Naran. If you have a week and want variety, from a river valley and Buddhist history to high meadows, choose Swat. In winter, Naran is closed, upper Swat is a long haul, and Nathiagali is the practical choice for snow.
Nathiagali vs Naran vs Swat at a glance
Nathiagali sits at roughly 2,410 metres in the Galiyat. It is about 2.5 hours from Islamabad and around six hours of driving from Lahore. It is open all year, with heavy snow from December to February. It is a forest and walking destination with a small bazaar, and it suits weekends, families and older travellers.
Naran sits at about 2,409 metres in the upper Kaghan Valley, almost exactly the same height as Nathiagali. It is roughly 275 to 285 km and seven to eight hours from Islamabad, and twelve hours or more from Lahore. The road is normally closed by snow from about November until April or May, so the real season runs from late May to early October. It is a base for lakes, rivers and the road to Babusar Pass, and it needs at least three nights.
Swat is a whole valley rather than one town. Mingora, the main city, is about 250 km and roughly five hours from Islamabad on the M-1 and the Swat Motorway, but it sits at only around 900 metres and is warm in summer. The cool places are further on: Malam Jabba at around 2,800 metres, and Kalam at about 2,000 metres, which is another 100 km and three to five hours up the valley. Swat is open most of the year, and it rewards five days to a week.
How far is each from Islamabad and Lahore?
This is the factor that should decide most trips. Nathiagali is close enough to leave Islamabad after breakfast and be walking in pine forest before lunch. From Lahore it is a long but manageable day: about four hours on the M2 and then the climb.
Naran is a full day from Islamabad. The Hazara Motorway makes the first stretch to Mansehra quick, but the remaining 160 km or so through Balakot and Kaghan is slow mountain road that takes four to six hours. From Lahore it is a twelve to fourteen hour journey door to door, and most people sensibly break it overnight in Islamabad, Abbottabad or Balakot. Kalam is similar: six to eight hours from Islamabad, and a very long day from Lahore. For a two-day weekend, that arithmetic rules both of them out. You would spend more time driving than being there.
Which has the longer season?
Nathiagali, comfortably. The road is open all year apart from short closures after heavy snowfall, and each season offers something: mild 15 to 25C summers, clear autumns, a proper snow season and a quiet spring.
Naran has the shortest season of the three. The road beyond Kaghan towards Naran is closed by snow every winter, typically from around November, and clearing it usually runs into late spring. Babusar Pass, the 4,000-metre-plus crossing beyond Naran, opens later still, usually in late May or June, and closes again in autumn. If a trip to Lake Saif-ul-Malook or Babusar is the point, plan for mid-June to September and check the road status before booking. Swat sits between the two: Mingora and the lower valley are accessible all year, Malam Jabba operates as a ski resort in winter, and the Kalam road can be blocked for periods by snow.

Read the best time to visit Nathiagali →Which is more crowded?
All three are busy from mid-June to mid-August, and nobody should pretend otherwise. The difference is in how the crowds feel. Naran packs a huge number of visitors into a short season and a single bazaar street, and the jeep track to Saif-ul-Malook and the road to Babusar can queue badly in July. Swat's numbers are spread over a much larger area, though Kalam and Malam Jabba fill up at Eid. Nathiagali is a small village and its bazaar is busy on summer weekends, but it is noticeably calmer midweek, and ten minutes down any forest trail you are largely alone. The busier neighbour in the Galiyat is Murree, which we have compared separately.
If your shortlist is really Murree or Nathiagali, that comparison covers crowds, access, snow and where to stay.
Read Nathiagali vs Murree →Which has the easier road?
Nathiagali has the least mountain driving: about an hour of winding road from Murree, or 30 to 45 minutes from Abbottabad. An ordinary car is fine outside snow spells. The road to Naran is drivable in a standard saloon in season, but it is long, follows the Kunhar River gorge, and is prone to landslides in the monsoon, which can shut it for a day or more after heavy rain. Beyond Naran, and for Saif-ul-Malook, a jeep or a higher-clearance vehicle is the norm. Swat has the best approach road of the three as far as Chakdara, thanks to the motorway, but the final stretch from Bahrain to Kalam is slow, and the valleys beyond Kalam need a 4x4.
Which is best for families and elderly parents?
For young children and grandparents, shorter drives and gentler days win. Nathiagali's altitude is the same as Naran's, so the air is no thinner, but the journey is a third as long, Abbottabad's hospitals are under an hour away, and the signature walk, the Pipeline Track, is flat. Naran's highlights involve more hours in vehicles on rough tracks, which tires small children and is hard on bad backs. Swat works well for families who base themselves in one place, such as Malam Jabba or Kalam, and do not try to see the whole valley.
Where will you stay?
Naran and Kalam are hotel towns, with a very wide range from basic to comfortable, plus riverside camping and glamping in season. Much of it closes for winter. Swat has the broadest choice overall, including established hotels in Mingora and Saidu Sharif and resort accommodation at Malam Jabba. Nathiagali is smaller: a handful of hotels, including an internationally branded one that opened in 2025, guesthouses, and serviced apartments that give a family its own lounge and kitchen rather than two hotel rooms. In all three, book well ahead for July, August and Eid.
When Naran or Swat is the better choice
Choose Naran if you want scenery on a grander scale than the Galiyat can offer. Lake Saif-ul-Malook, Lulusar, the Kunhar River and Babusar Pass at over 4,000 metres are in a different league of drama from forested ridges, and if you have four or five days between mid-June and September, they are worth the drive. Choose Swat if you want variety and have a week: the motorway makes the journey comfortable, and you can combine Buddhist sites and museums in the lower valley with meadows, rivers and forest around Kalam. Swat is also the answer if someone in the party wants to ski. Choose Nathiagali when time is short, when the group includes the very young or the elderly, when you want to walk rather than drive, or when you want to go more than once a year.
