How Far Is Nathiagali from Lahore and Peshawar? Routes, Drive Times and Where to Stop
October 2026Nathia Gali is about six hours of driving from Lahore and about four hours from Peshawar, with the last hour on a winding mountain road. Most guides to Nathiagali assume you are starting in Islamabad. Many visitors are not. Lahore is the biggest source of summer traffic to the Galiyat, and Peshawar and the wider Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are closer than most people realise. This guide gives realistic drive times from both cities, the routes that actually work, where to stop, and when to leave.
The short answer
From Lahore, Nathiagali is about six hours of driving via the M2 motorway to Islamabad and then the Murree Expressway and the Galiyat road, closer to seven with stops. From Peshawar, it is roughly four hours via the M1 motorway, the Hazara Motorway to Abbottabad and the Galiyat road. From either city, the last hour is a winding mountain road, so time your departure to finish it in daylight.
Lahore to Nathiagali: the M2 route
Take the M2 motorway from Lahore to Islamabad, roughly 375 km and about four hours at motorway speed. Skirt Islamabad to join the Murree Expressway, climb to Murree, then continue along the Galiyat ridge road for about 35 km to Nathiagali. That final section from Islamabad, about 80 to 90 km, takes about 2.5 hours, giving six hours of driving door to door and closer to seven once you add fuel, food and a stretch.
The best stops on the M2 are the service areas around Bhera and at Kallar Kahar in the Salt Range, both with fuel, food and clean facilities. Fill the tank before leaving the motorway; fuel is available in Murree but stations thin out on the ridge. If you would rather not drive twice through Islamabad's traffic, an alternative is to take the M1 west from the end of the M2 to the Burhan interchange, join the Hazara Motorway to Abbottabad and climb the Galiyat road from there. It is a similar total time and avoids the Murree weekend queues.
Peshawar to Nathiagali: the Hazara Motorway route
Take the M1 motorway east from Peshawar to the Burhan interchange, about 1.5 hours, then the Hazara Motorway north to Havelian and Abbottabad, about another hour. From Abbottabad, the Galiyat road climbs 34 km through pine forest to Nathiagali in 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. Total roughly four hours, almost all of it on good roads, with only the last stretch winding.
Stop for fuel and food in Abbottabad, the last real city before the climb. It has supermarkets, banks and full hospitals, which is worth knowing if you are travelling with children or older relatives. Families from Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera and Charsadda follow the same route, joining the M1 at the nearest interchange.
Flying in from Karachi, Lahore or Quetta
For Karachi, and for Lahore travellers who would rather not drive six hours, fly to Islamabad International Airport and hire a car or a van with a driver from there. The airport sits west of the city, and the drive to Nathiagali via the Murree Expressway takes around three hours. Book the vehicle in advance for a morning arrival so you reach the hills by mid-afternoon, and ask specifically for a driver used to the Murree and Galiyat roads.
When to leave
The rule for every route is to finish the mountain section in daylight. From Lahore, leaving by 6 am puts you in Nathiagali by early afternoon with time to spare. From Peshawar, an 8 am departure arrives for lunch. On summer weekends and public holidays, the Murree Expressway can queue badly from mid-morning, so either leave earlier or take the Abbottabad approach. In winter, check road conditions before setting off and keep your arrival date flexible; snow can close the Galiyat road for a few hours after a heavy fall.

From December to February, use the Abbottabad side from either city. It has less mountain driving, it often reopens first after a snowfall, and Abbottabad gives you a place to wait in comfort if the last 34 km is closed for a few hours. Check conditions on the morning you travel, carry snow chains, and arrive with at least half a tank.
Our road guide covers snow closures, small cars, chains and where to check road status.

Only just. Twelve hours of round-trip driving for two nights is a lot, and most Lahore families who enjoy Nathiagali do three nights or more, or break the journey with a night in Islamabad. If a weekend is all you have, leave on Thursday evening and sleep in Islamabad, drive up early on Friday, and come down on Sunday morning before the Murree traffic builds.
Once you are here, our itinerary shows how to spend two or three days without rushing.

The Galiyat road is narrow and winding whichever side you arrive from. Drive in a lower gear on descents, give way on blind bends, keep the car cool for anyone prone to car sickness, and do not overtake buses on the curves. Mobile signal is patchy in the valleys, so download your maps before you leave the motorway. Once you arrive, park and walk; the village is small and the main road is busy in season.
